Top Mistakes That Ruin Lash Retention

Lash extensions are an investment and nothing is more frustrating than watching them shed sooner than expected. While some lash loss is completely normal, poor retention is often caused by a few common (and avoidable) mistakes.

At Nova Beauty Studio, we prioritise lash health, longevity, and luxury results. If your lashes aren’t lasting as long as they should, one of these could be the reason.

What Is Lash Retention?

Lash retention refers to how long your lash extensions stay bonded to your natural lashes before shedding. Good retention means your lashes last beautifully between infills, maintaining fullness and shape.

Poor retention doesn’t always mean bad lashes, it’s usually a mix of application, aftercare and lifestyle habits.

1. Sleeping on Your Lashes

Side and stomach sleepers: this one’s for you.

Constant friction from pillows causes twisting, pulling and premature shedding. Over time, this can seriously impact retention.

What helps:

  • Sleeping on your back when possible

  • Using a silk or satin pillowcase

  • A lash-friendly sleep mask

2. Skipping Proper Lash Cleansing

Yes, dirty lashes fall off faster.

Oil, makeup, sweat, and skincare residue break down lash adhesive. Not cleansing your lashes regularly can cause poor retention and even irritation.

Best practice:

  • Clean lashes 3–4 times a week (daily if you wear makeup)

  • Use an oil-free lash cleanser

  • Gently pat dry - no rubbing

3. Using Oil-Based Products Near the Eyes

Oils are lash glue’s worst enemy.

Eye creams, makeup removers, sunscreens, and serums that migrate into the lash line can weaken bonds and cause extensions to slip.

Switch to:

  • Oil-free skincare and makeup

  • Gel or water-based eye products

  • Lash-safe makeup removers

4. Touching, Pulling, or Playing With Your Lashes

Constantly touching your lashes causes stress on both the extensions and your natural lashes.

Avoid:

  • Pulling or twisting lashes

  • Rubbing eyes

  • Picking at shedding lashes

Let them shed naturally, your infill will take care of the rest.

5. Waiting Too Long Between Infills

The weight of the extension falls further and futher away from the base of the lash as it grows out. With pressure increasing on the end tip of the lash, you run the risk of breakage. Waiting too long between infills means fewer natural lashes are available to hold extensions, leading to sparse sets and poor overall retention.

Recommended infill schedule:

  • Every 2–3 weeks

6. Poor Application or Incorrect Weight

Not all lash sets are created equal.

Incorrect isolation, improper adhesive use, or lashes that are too heavy for your natural lashes can cause early fallout and damage.

This is why choosing a qualified, experienced lash artist matters.

At Nova Beauty Studio, we focus on:

  • Customised lash mapping

  • Healthy weight selection

  • Precise isolation

  • Premium, cruelty-free products

How to Improve Your Lash Retention

If you want lashes that last:

  • Follow aftercare instructions closely

  • Book regular infills

  • Use lash-safe products

  • Choose a studio that prioritises lash health

Retention isn’t luck. It’s technique and care.
