What is the lash shed?

The “lash shed” refers to the natural process of your eyelashes falling out and regrowing over time. Just like the hair on your scalp, your natural lashes go through a cycle of growth, rest, and shedding. On average, you can lose between 2–5 natural lashes per eye per day—and when you have extensions applied, this process becomes more noticeable.

You may see full extensions falling out with the natural lash still attached—this is completely normal.

The Lash Growth Cycle: A Quick Overview

Each lash goes through three main phases:

  1. Anagen (Growth Phase) – The lash is actively growing.

  2. Catagen (Transition Phase) – Growth stops, and the follicle begins to shrink.

  3. Telogen (Shedding Phase) – The lash is released and falls out to make room for new growth.

Every natural lash is in a different phase of this cycle, which is why shedding can seem unpredictable or uneven.

Is Seasonal Lash Shedding Real?

Yes, it is! Just like we experience seasonal hair shedding on our scalp, your lashes can be affected by seasonal changes—particularly in autumn and spring. These transitional times can cause a temporary increase in shedding, which is completely normal and usually resolves on its own.

How Does Lash Shedding Affect Extensions?

When your natural lashes shed, the extensions attached to them fall out as well. During periods of increased shedding, your extensions may appear to thin more quickly, even with proper aftercare.

This is why regular infill appointments every 2–3 weeks are so important—they allow your lash artist to maintain fullness by replacing extensions lost during your natural shed.

Can I Prevent the Lash Shed?

You can't stop the lash cycle (nor should you—it’s a healthy biological function), but you can support your natural lashes by:

  • Using a lash serum to promote stronger, healthier lashes

  • Avoiding oil-based products near your eyes

  • Cleaning your lashes regularly with a lash-safe cleanser

  • Booking regular infills to maintain your desired look
